Mabel McKay : Weaving the Dream (Portraits of American Genius, 1) Vol 1; Greg Sarris; Hardcover; $12.60; Read more about this title...

  • The first dream dancer and doctor (Bole Maru, the California Ghost Dance that came a generation before the one on the Plains), was Cache Creek Pomo Richard Taylor, brother to Sarah Taylor, the grandmother who raised California's foremost basket weaver, doctor, and cultural preservationist, Mabel McKay (1907-1993). A recent biography of her by Gregg Sarris, emphasizes these two elements of great cultural importance (and the fact that she dreamed basket designs; the baskets themselves had power through those designs). See Short Pomo history, part of the basketry section here.

Kashaya Pomo Plants; Jennie Goodrich, et al; Paperback; $10.36
